So there's this string quartet from London, the Doric String Quartet, and they're coming to Newcastle City Hall on 23 June 2026. Four people, four instruments, but somehow they squeeze out an almost absurd range of emotion. They'll be playing Beethoven's String Quartet in F Major Op. 59 No. 1, the one nicknamed 'Razumovsky' – a piece that's equal parts rich and wonderfully weird, described by critics as having "sumptuous sweetness and laser-like clarity." Then they'll settle into some early Benjamin Britten, which is more delicate and introspective, like a quiet cup of tea after that Beethoven sprint.
But the real curiosity of the night is Alchymia, by Thomas Adès. It's a quintet for strings and basset clarinet, meant to sound like an atmospheric wander through London streets. Joining the quartet for that one is Australian clarinettist Lloyd Van't Hoff, whom The Age once called "a technical and expressive master of his instrument" – which is a polite way of saying he's very, very good. So you've got international musicians, a local hero, and a program that bounces from classic bombast to quiet beauty to something a bit strange and wonderful. Tickets run from 40 to 135 dollars, and the venue has disabled access if you need it. Just be aware the whole thing is non smoking, so leave the ciggies at home.
